Rumours: Ricardo Arona signed a contract with a new Russian M-1 MMA organization; might fight Fedor Emelianenko in December

Brazilian MMA fighter Ricardo Arona

Brazilian "Vale Tudo News" announced that after a secret negotiations, the former Brasilian Pride FC star Ricardo Arona announced to the press that he signed a four fight contract with the upcoming M-1 Global MMA organization. Because of the contract the opponents couldn't be named. Arona says that now his thoughts are on training being focused for his debut in December in M-1 Global. Asked if his first fight would be with Fedor, Arona smiled but kept silent.
Unfortunately I couldn't confirm this information from the reliable source nor could I locate the source (so called "Vale Tudo News") of this information. All I could find is that there is a "Vale Tudo" Martial Arts magazine in Brazil, but they didn't have anything on the Internet that would confirm the above breaking news.

Brazilian MMA fighter Ricardo Arona is a very well known BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) expert and one of the biggest stars in the already dead Pride FC organization. As a fighter Ricardo is propably best known for his excellent grappling skill, bad stand-up technique and a brutal and dirty fighting style.

Fedor Emelianenko, the undefeated Pride FC champion, has fought Ricardo Arona almost 7 years ago. They clashed on December 22, 2000 and Fedor Emelianenko won that fight after the extra round. Here you can watch the fight:
  • Arona vs. Fedor. 1st Round. (YouTube.com clip)
  • Arona vs. Fedor. 2nd Round. (YouTube.com clip)
  • Arona vs. Fedor. Extra Round. (YouTube.com clip)
  • Highlight of the Fedor Emelianenko vs. Ricardo Arona fight (YouTube.com clip)

The whole fight can be described as a boring by the modern standards. At that time fighters were young and inexperienced (it was one of the first fights for both of them) and because it was fought under the RINGS organization rules with all its limitations. These limitations, among many things, forbidden kicking the opponent on the ground and punching him to the face. So the "Ground and Pound" (GnP) technique for which Fedor Emelianenko is known for wasn't allowed.

All in all the fight was close, but Fedor had better striking, made more submission attempts and a whole bunch of takedowns. Ricardo was more in a top position, but spent almost half of that time fighting out of guillotines. He also made a few decent kimura attempts, but never came even close, because being so straightforward and predictable.

The third and extra round was won by Fedor convincingly.

Considering the fact that there was no GnP in Rings, it was Fedor basically having an ADCC (Submission Wrestling World Championship - can be compared to the Olympics in grappling, which was won by Ricardo Arona in Absolute Division class in 2001) match with one of the best BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) guys in the world. A fight between the two in modern day MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) would go much different...

It still would be very interesting to see this fight, because Ricardo Arona truly is one hell of a BJJ fighter and by many considered to be one of a top10 Heavyweight MMA fighters in the world.

Let's just hope that this rumour turn out to be true. Keep our fingers clossed!..
